Briess Carapils® is a dextrin malt with a color level around 1.3 Lovibond, making it a very light malt. It is widely used for its ability to improve body, mouthfeel, and foam stability in beers without imparting additional color or significant flavor. It contributes unfermentable sugars (dextrins) to the beer, which helps enhance the beer’s overall mouthfeel and body while improving head retention.
Given its unique properties, Briess Carapils® is a versatile malt that can be used in a wide range of beer styles, including but not limited to:
- Light Lagers and Pilsners: It’s especially useful in these styles for enhancing body and mouthfeel without adding color or flavor.
- Pale Ales and IPAs: Carapils® can balance hoppy bitterness with a fuller mouthfeel and improve head retention.
- Wheat Beers: The malt contributes to improved body and foam stability, which is desirable in wheat beers.
- Session Beers: For beers with lower alcohol content that may lack body, Carapils® is beneficial.
- Any Style Prioritizing Foam Stability: Essentially, any beer style that benefits from enhanced mouthfeel and head retention can utilize Carapils®.
